11/5 Andrew Solomon, “The Dignity of Disabled Lives”

This article is very interesting and the thing that stuck with me the most was the relation between the disability movement and the homosexual, racial and womens movements. A lot has changed since 1968, when Joseph Fletcher wrote an article for the Atlantic that was quoted saying “there was no reason to feel guilty about putting a Down’s syndrome baby away” in reference to dumping a disability baby in a group home or disposing of it entirely. People with disabilities today not only have rights, but seamlessly fit into our society today, holding jobs, voting and getting married. However there is still a lingering underlying prejudice against these people. I think these many steps in the right direction are thanks to society becoming more open minded as a whole. It is interesting to see similarities between where the disability movement was in 1968 and where it is now, vs. the race movement, the homosexuality movement and the womans rights movement in the same timeline.
