Here is evidence that I have interacted with the Chen Reading for Paper 3:
REFLECTION
1
While reading Moises Velasquez-Manoff, something raised a question to me which I annotated in the comments. Velasquez-Manoff wrote “diverse juries give fairer verdicts; diverse companies are more profitable; researchers argue that diverse countries have stronger economies.” To me this seemed like a foreign topic I had little to no background information on, so I raised a question. I wanted to know why these juries gave fairer verdicts, why diverse companies are more profitable and so on. I raised the question “Is this due to increased open mindedness/ creativity?” – something Velasquez-Manoff had brought up briefly before. This as a whole helped me understand diversity better as I searched for an answer to this question in other readings. In the end this understanding of the benefits of diversity helped me write a better, fuller piece on categorization.
Wrap up reflection
Throughout this semester, my ability and my desire to engaged with texts has vastly increased. I used to look at annotations with a sense of annoyance, questioning why do I have to take the time to comment if i’m already spending this time reading this article. through the course of this semester I began to pick up on the importance of annotations, realizing by making comments the first time around, I am saving time in the future when I have to scope out important parts of articles and scope out important quotes. through this realization, the quality of my annotations has increased as well. I began to do something really interesting and that was annotating possible important quotes for future papers that I had not even been given the prompt for yet. Through the evidence provided it is clear that my ability to engage with texts has grown from September until now. I still need to make progress on the consistency of my annotations. I still have a habit of getting too far in the zone while reading and forgetting to annotate a certain length of passages and this is something I will continue to develop as an active reader.
